Interpersonal Communication Questions Negotiation Skills ...

Donald asks?

Please help, how can i improve my business negotiation skills?

are there any tips for my bussiness, please advice for me. any answers will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

InterCommTeam answers:

First, I have to ask what kind of business are you in? Second, what are you negotiating?

General tips to negotiations is be prepared. Have a checklist of points arguing your side and strengthen your posistion. Make the other party meet you at least half way, but at the same time giving them the impression that you are the one who made the compromise. You need to come away making them feel that they got a decent deal from their end.

Ruth asks?

Can Obama demonstrate his negotiation skills to reduce the murder rate in Chicago?

InterCommTeam answers:

In my opinion and the research I did on the murder- crime rate in the past few months in South Chicago,It may be coinsidence but Obama just may have demonstrated that his skills have definetly raised the murder/crime rates to a all time high, could be a race battle going on, but there is no evidence yet! No joke!

William asks?

Describe a recent experience where you have applied your influencing and negotiation skills?

InterCommTeam answers:

Not yet experienced

John asks?

why is understanding negotiation skills important?

why is understanding negotiation skills important? what the advantages in using negotiation skills in a business context ?

InterCommTeam answers:

Salary, deals, promotions, just about most transactions business is concerned with.

Joseph asks?

Do you think I can get a $15,000 car for $11,000 with good negotiation skills?

Now for those of you laughing at me, how much should I push for the dealer to lower the price. I?m not sure if I?ll get a new car or a low mileage certified used car.

InterCommTeam answers:

TRY THIS???????

End of month is a great time to BUY your new car, but it is NOT the best time to make your first dealership visit. Salesmen do try harder to make sales at the end of the month, which is about the last five days of the calendar month.

In addition to the end of the month, there are better and worse times of the year to buy. Best time of the year to buy is the end of December, in most dealerships. Dealerships try to make specific quotas for end of month AND end of calendar year, and it is not a popular time to buy, so sales can slump seriously and they will try harder to make a sale, which means a better bargain. If you shy away from buying in the winter because of bad weather, think again: bad weather is when you WANT to be in the car, testing it?s foul weather capabilities.

Other good times of year to buy are end of August and end of September because the old models are taking up space on the dealership property, and they want to make room for the new models to come in. If your heart is not set on a brand new model, this is an excellent time to buy a perfectly good new car that happens to have been manufactured a few months earlier.

There is a very important BUT to this end of month advice: Do NOT make your very first visit to the dealership at the end of the month. Go to the dealership at the beginning or middle of the month, test drive the cars, get some info, then go home and give yourself two to three weeks to get the best financing. THEN go back at month?s end armed with full information and a buying plan. Give yourself a day or two extra in case the first dealership doesn?t work out and you need to go to another one. This is a big purchase, don?t try to do it all in an afternoon!

Chris asks?

Would these negotiation skills have been needed for the Collins project :-Maximize the ability to sustain?

win/win relationships ?

InterCommTeam answers:

Yes for those who will profit from either its success or demise, they would have covered themselves to ensure no matter what happened that would have something to gain :)

Robert asks?

Negotiation skills activities?

I have a project/presentation and I need one activity to show to the class what negotiation skills are, and another activity where the class has a chance to apply negotiation skills. Any ideas?

InterCommTeam answers:

Negotiation is basically to try to get someone to agree with you
i normally do this by making a compromise with whoever i?m negotiating

Last updated 17 hours ago

Many people are often anxious about considering elder care for their loved ones, but the truth is that elder care provides a variety of necessary services to those in need.? A family is often unable to provide the necessary help required to support their loved ones in their time of need.? However, elder care at home addresses the needs of everyone by providing the convenience and comfort of a home care companion at an affordable cost.? Take a look at just a few of the ways that in-home elder care can help your family:

Security

Seniors typically have less physical, emotional, and economic reserves to insulate them from the impacts of criminal activities or serious accidents.? In-home elder care offers the protection and support of another person at their side when others may have too many obligations to consistently ensure their safety.

Individual Care

An in-home elder care service offers one-on-one supervision and interaction for your loved one.? A home care companion works with them to ensure both their comfort and peace of mind.

Housekeeping

Due to a variety of factors, elderly people may suffer from debilitating conditions that inhibit their ability to perform simple functions.? In-home elder care focuses on helping your loved one maintain their independence while providing them with necessary services to ensure their good health.

Cost

Independent caregiving can be a significant investment of your physical, economic, and psychological resources.? While you should never hesitate to consider all of the best care options for your loved one, in-home elder care can ease the responsibility of independent caregiving and is often more affordable than comprehensive assisted living facilities.

RIM sticking with consumer goods, just 'refocusing' on enterprise

RIM
Some people got the wrong idea yesterday when RIM's new CEO Thorsten Heins said the company was refocusing on the enterprise market and would stop trying to be "all things to all people." Many took the post-earnings call comment to mean that RIM would be exiting the consumer market, an assumption that didn't seem like much of a stretch considering its failure to capture the imagination of users outside the office place. Things weren't made any better when Heins seemingly left the door open for the manufacturer to leave the hardware business entirely. However, in a statement, managing director of global sales and regional marketing Patrick Spence clarified that "the claim that RIM has said it will withdraw from the consumer market is wholly misleading." He continued to explain that, "whilst we announced plans to refocus our efforts on our core strengths, and on our enterprise customer base, we were very explicit that we will continue to build on our strengths to go after targeted consumer segments." In particular there still seems to be hope that BBM can become a staple in the lives of young trend setters, but it'll probably need some help from cross platform clients to do so.

Wood Flooring ? General Guideline for Adapting | Home ...

Parquet is popular among homeowners and commercial businesses because of its durability and elegant effect. They are composed of two or more layers of wood glued together is covered with hard wood. These components can withstand high humidity and has a longer lifetime than solid wood flooring. Like all stories, is the key to resilience quality of fitting.

The most common method is suitable for floating method. This is determined by a writing on the existing floor, and binding of the tongue and groove with PVA wood glue. Thus, all new floor suspended over the original bottom.

In the method for driving a substrate, the contact between the floor and the substrate can take place. For the purposes of an echo occurring in the space between the two floors means. The carrier is generally in various forms, and is dependent on the thickness and quality. The simplest is the range of 3 mm foam is generally recommended flooring. Fibreboard is not advisable to use real wood flooring because it causes too much movement.

In the meantime, other documents are still precious wood floor and the extent to Excel, the same function in the delivery of sound and adds cushion on the floor. They are particularly suited for use in homes and apartments where minimal noise is essential.

Apparently the multi-adhesive backing from a majority of the homeowners accepted as the most user friendly method to support the establishment, because it is a sticky side support, which automatically puts on the new floor from the ground and hold him. On the other hand. The disadvantage of using a floating floor method, where the presence of a small degree of motion or reduced in certain parts of the earth This is normal if they do not hang with the subfloor. The solution is to break down the floor and further support for the substrate, so that the solid.

When installing a suspended floor expansion joints that are necessary for the tree reacts with moisture and wetness. In general, be about 15 mm space for expansion joints, and will be concealed by the skirting board.

Parquet floors can also be linked directly to the floor or nailed on an existing wooden floor. The engineered thicker plates (18 to 22 mm thick) can be directly riveted to the beam, because they are structurally plates. They must be nailed directly through the tongue at an angle of 45 degrees to as discretely as possible.

If the same look and made of solid hardwood floor, so the choice of flooring is the best solution. It is not only versatile, but also cheaper than hardwood. In addition, the installation is so simple that you can not adapt to the experts because you can actually do it yourself.

The Hard Facts: It's All In Your Head | MWF Seeking BFF

It?s Research Wednesday! Where I share the latest, or most fascinating, in the science of friendship.

?Researchers are suggesting that there is a link between the number of friends you have and the size of the region of the brain ? known as the orbital prefrontal cortex ? that is found just above the eyes. A new study shows that this brain region is bigger in people who have a larger number of friendships.? (?Brain Size May Determine Whether You Are Good at Keeping Friends?; ?Sciencedaily.com 2/24/2012)

We already knew that the size of the human brain is related to the size of our social networks. According to The Dunbar Number, humans can maintain about 150 relationships at one time. That?s relationships, not friendships. It includes the people you might see on the street, chat with, and know how they fit into your life.

This new research says that the size of an individual?s orbital prefrontal cortex is directly related to how many friends she can hold on to. I?m not going to lie, the brain research is sometimes over my head. (Aagh! Pun! Not intended!) But the gist is that to maintain a lot of pals we need to be able to understand how other people think, and the bigger the frontal lobe, the better we are at that mind-reading, or ?mentalising? as the researchers call it.

Here?s how Robin Dunbar, who is also the brain behind this latest study, explains it: ??Mentalising? is where one individual is able to follow a natural hierarchy involving other individuals? mind states. For example, in the play ?Othello?, Shakespeare manages to keep track of five separate mental states: he intended that his audience believes that Iago wants Othello to suppose that Desdemona loves Cassio. Being able to maintain five separate individuals? mental states is the natural upper limit for most adults.??

Here?s what I?m wondering: Now that we know the specific social skill (mentalising) that contributes to someone having a lot of friends, can a person work on that skill? Can she strengthen it if she wants to be able to keep more pals? Or does the size of the frontal lobe determine your mentalising ability, and that?s that?

It?s unclear from the research. What we know is this: ?The size of your brain determines your social skills, and it is these that allow you to have many friends,? or, as Dunbar said, ?there is a link between the ability to read how other people think and social network size.?

All of which is to say one thing: Want more friends? Work on your mind-reading. Tall order.

CHICAGOThere is an imbalance between the rapid growth of cardiac catheterization laboratories, which provide percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures, relative to the growth in the overall U.S. population, as well as patients who experience an acute heart attack, or ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), according to a study presented March 25 at the 61st annual American College of Cardiology (ACC) scientific session.

PCI is the preferred treatment strategy for patients who undergo STEMI. However, distance and access to PCI remains a determining factor in the choice between PCI, fibrinolytics and hybrid strategies.

"The prevalence of STEMI has decreased over time, while the prevalence of PCI centers has increased significantly. While clinical outcomes with PCI have continued to improve, we are tasked with the challenge of ensuring proper access to care for all at-risk Americans," said study co-investigator Timothy D. Henry, MD, an interventional cardiologist at the Minneapolis Heart Institute (MHI) at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and director of research with the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation. "We found that there is a significant mismatch between PCI-capable facilities, and actual need."

In this study, the researchers compared changes in U.S. PCI capacity and access during the last eight years. Using geospatial and statistical analyses of data from the American Hospital Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Census Bureau, they analyzed PCI capacity relative to population density and STEMI prevalence.

The investigators found that PCI centers have grown 12.9 percent over the last eight years, while overall population has grown only 8.3 percent during this same period and STEMI rates have declined. The median number of PCI facilities per million capita across all states is currently 6.95, and ranges from 3.2 in Vermont (lowest) to 12.1 in West Virginia.

Henry explained that the central portion of the U.S. is the most densely concentrated while the upper western region poses significant distance and access issuesthe greatest potential distance to the nearest PCI in that region is nearly 185 miles. States varied widely in capacity, access, and the distance between patients and PCI.

Thus, the study authors reported that PCI growth is most rapid in the east, where capacity is already sufficient and the lowest in the west where PCI capacity remains the lowest. "Efficient and equitable STEMI systems require geographical balance, which highlights a need for changes in both policy and protocols at regional levels," they wrote.

"Unfortunately, our findings reveal that the growth of PCI centers has not been planned and rationale, but driven by economic factors, leading to an excess of PCI facilities in areas where they are not needed," said Henry. "There is a significant disparity between the geographic areas of the U.S. that still require STEMI care, and where those services are provided, which raises concern about a lack of access to care for a treatable patient population."

Inspiration is essential to staying motivated and bettering oneself. If you?re not fascinated about your corporation, your motivation degree won?t ever be high and also you won?t be able to maintain interest for very long.

Take an honest have a look at your inspiration level. Are you enthusiastic about going to work or is it an obligation? You?d be stunned at the number of people who select a enterprise that appears good on paper, however in reality liverpool fc transfer rumours does not interest them in the least.

These people will grow weary and uninterested fairly shortly because they don?t have any inspiration or ardour to maintain them through the tough times they will encounter as a small enterprise owner.

If you do not like your work, then assume how you can re-focus your small enterprise to better match your needs. Or contemplate making a change entirely. Without inspiration, there won?t be motivated to even strive self improvement.

2. SETTING GOALS.

Brief and long-time period goal setting is important for any enterprise owner. If you do not set objectives, you would don?t have any particular purpose on which path of self enchancment to take.

How could you presumably be motivated in case you had been not sure nook color concerning the route of your company?

Take the time to put your objectives in writing. A marketing strategy might sound daunting, however it?s actually nothing greater than objectives, methods, implementation and a budget. Write your personal marketing strategy and update it no less than annually.

Embrace ?mini-objectives? that may be achieved in a matter of hours, days or weeks in addition to the extra ambitious ?grand-objectives? that will take years to complete. Check with this plan throughout the year.

But can a marketing strategy actually help motivate you? Of course. Written objectives will make you feel extra professional and definitely extra related to your business. It should also free you from having to reinvent your corporation objectives each single day.

3. NETWORKING.

Another key think about getting and staying motivated is networking with other small enterprise owners. No one particular person knows all the knowledge.

Nevertheless, when quite a lot of individuals begin working collectively, the challenges will simply be there ready to be conquered.

The truth is, the isolation of working alone is of one essentially the most tough parts of being an entrepreneur. You may never be in your solution to self enchancment with out the help of others. Mutual help is motivating.
Make it easier on yourself by connecting with others either in your community or online. Even when companies usually are not associated, you will often discover common floor and methods to work together.

Many profitable entrepreneurs report that finding the fitting networking group was a turning level in the growth of the business. Working collectively, a networking group may also help its members generate extra qualified sales leads and clear up issues sooner and extra efficiently.

Sharing ideas, expertise and experience can be a useful facet of motivation and self improvement.
Your own personal crew of enterprise house owners will help re-energize you when the burdens of operating your personal enterprise seem too much.

Along with your networking crew to depend on, you?ll be able to accomplish extra in less time and doubtless have extra enjoyable in the process. You?ll feel motivated to accomplish self enchancment when you already know you are not alone.

The Intersection Event Is Where Innovation And Social Change Meet ...

This blog is written by a member of our expert blogging community and expresses that expert's views alone.

There has been a lot of talk about ?intersections? lately--intersections of business and art, intersections of marketing and nature, intersections of technology and health, and so on.

I recently became involved in a conversation about intersections through the new annual event, The Intersection Event, which examines the intersection between business innovation and social change. This year?s event was set inside of Pixar Animation Studios, and next year?s is slated to be held in January at the Googleplex. But more interesting than their backdrops, which are arguably among the most creative in the country, is the question they?re trying to answer: ?Can business innovation and social change effectively create a symbiotic relationship??

I recently had the opportunity to chat with the founder, Randy Haykin, to learn more about this interesting intersection.

SHAWN PARR: How would you characterize the intersection of business innovation and social change, and the emergence of social enterprise as a widely studied, taught, and advancing discipline?

RANDY HAYKIN: A great question because this idea of holding an event called ?Intersection? seems to be hitting a chord with a lot of people--they recognize that business innovation and social change are related...but how? As a serial entrepreneur, teacher, and mentor to startups over the years, I?ve seen hundreds of examples of business innovation--in both large and small startups. In the past, much of this innovation has been targeted to making better, faster, cheaper products and services. More products, more companies, more investments equals more money. Unfortunately, in the past, innovation has not been focused on a better lifestyle, improved standard of living, healthy environment, or a safe world for billions of people who live below the poverty line around the world.

As a professor working with many of tomorrow?s future leaders at UC Berkeley and University of Cambridge, I've noticed a change in the past five years. Many students no longer just ask, ?How can I make more money?? Increasingly, they are beginning to ask, ?How can I make the greatest impact??

Meanwhile, environmental concerns and poverty have caused many global corporations to focus on ?CSR? (Corporate Social Responsibility) and take responsibility for things beyond profits, such as community, environment, and education. That means the focus both at a university and a corporate level has shifted. We will see a swing in global consciousness as a new set of social entrepreneurs use innovation to effect positive social change. The swing in consciousness is the intersection between innovation and social change. The new consciousness says, ?How can I use new innovative models, products, practices, and thinking to impact those issues that are our greatest enemies as human beings??

With all the changes going on, it is easy to observe examples of the intersection of innovation and social change in all walks of life. Examples of this are already in play: Innovations in social media affect political balance (think Egypt, Syria, and the IAVA); innovations in technology affect biotech, agriculture, food and oil production (think Water.org or Solayzme); innovations in business models affect the ways that goods and services from Africa, India, and Latin America can be brought to the rest of the world (think Kiva.org or World of Good), and there is so much more that it?s dizzying to keep up with it each week.

How will social innovation and social enterprise shape the next decade of international development?

We are already seeing signs of this. The first wave was the outsourcing of labor among countries in the 1980s. In the 1990s we began to see that the world was interconnected financially and via the Internet. We?ve transformed in the first decade of this century to a truly global economy, one in which companies do create and sell their products on a global scale and, unfortunately, one in which a ?sneeze? in Greece affects the entire global financial scene. Today we are seeing that the effects of the Internet, communication technologies, and social media are transforming the way teams, companies, countries, and continents relate to one another. We are living in a time where there is the potential for rapid social change unlike any other in history.

Against this backdrop, innovation has the potential to shape the future of most of the major social issues of our time.Take global health, for example. Using innovative technologies and techniques, the Gates Foundation has been able to nearly eradicate polio by focusing on a multi-national and holistic solutions. The same is true in education. The old collegiate system of the past is about to crumble in the next 10 years and university ?brands? are likely to give way to new, nimble ways of educating people--it?s the experience that the university provides which will be valued, rather than the diploma or brand. The same will be the case for poverty issues, environmental concerns, and energy consumption.

What role do you envision The Intersection Event playing in that development?

The Intersection Event is developed by The Gratitude Network as a means of bringing together innovative thinkers from a variety of fields who have an interest in making a difference. The Gratitude Network was designed to fund social entrepreneurs who have revolutionary ideas that can have local, regional, or national impact on social issues.

The Intersection is a unique way to bring together thought leaders from a variety of fields and draw out the intersections in thinking that are most likely to lead to new discoveries, ways of thinking, relationships, and connections. We?ve designed this inaugural event to cover a variety of topics from personal innovation to team creativity to entrepreneurial innovation and then look at ways in which each of these areas impacts social change.

What do you now know that you didn?t know when you first began your venture capital endeavors?

I used to think ?creativity? meant Picasso. What I now know is that some of the most creative energy on the planet is bundled up in the minds of our founders, entrepreneurs, and young leaders. Entrepreneurial spirit has positively affected the U.S. economy dramatically in the past 40 years, and I think it will drive economies in the future. Those parts of the world that apply new rules of how to intersect with these entrepreneurs, by providing the best environment for them to operate out of, will be the long-term growth economies of the 21st century.

What have been some of the milestone achievements of the intersection of business innovation and social change?

In the last few centuries, major technological inventions--the birth of automotive and aviation industries, the invention of the telephone, the discovery of DNA--have played a role in social change. But these inventions were not driven by a desire for social change. They produced a social outcome as a by-product. They were mostly inspired by scientific achievement, discovery, or the profit motive.

We can look at milestones in terms of technology, applications of this technology, or ways in which the applications were enabled by a system of funding. The system of funding intrigues me as a former VC the most.

The old method of appropriation was public funding. But in the U.S. today, it is clear that this is no longer working. We cannot solve our present social issues in this country or elsewhere around the world through the use of public funds or government agencies. Bipartisan issues now bog down any progress we can conceive of.

To me, new forms of innovative funding are the things that drive. Following is a list of financial innovations we?ve seen in the past 40 years in the area of social change:

1976: Grameen Bank & Opportunity International founded

1981: Ashoka founded by Bill Drayton

2001: Acumen Fund founded by Jacqueline Norquist

2004: Facebook founded by Mark Zuckerberg

2005: Kiva.org founded by Matt Flannery & Jessica Jackley

If The Intersection Event rests upon one core philosophy, what would that be?

That philosophy is this: Some of the greatest inventions the world has seen were developed incrementally as one person built on another?s ideas, sometimes transcending decades or even centuries between them. What makes for a real innovation is that someone takes a previous idea and juxtapositions it in new light, or with a new twist, or in a new context. That means finding the intersection between the original observation or thought and the new environment or situation. The most fertile areas for innovation--and the most new ideas--are likely to occur at the intersection of several great minds.

NZ venture capital pot gets $40m boost | Stuff.co.nz

TOM PULLAR-STRECKER

High-profile United States technology investor Peter Thiel has set up a $40 million venture capital fund in partnership with the New Zealand Venture Investment Fund (NZVIF), set up by the Government in 2002 to kick start the venture capital industry.

NZVIF has committed $20m to the fund, Valar Ventures LP, which will invest in young Kiwi technology firms, with Thiel investing $15m and private New Zealand investors chipping in the balance.

Thiel co-founded and headed PayPal before he sold it to eBay, and was Facebook's first outside investor.

Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce said it was a very positive development.

''Because of the small size of the domestic market, fast-growth New Zealand businesses need access to world markets a lot earlier than a similar company would in the United States.''

NZVIF chief executive Franceska Banga said the fund would bring ''deep experience'' and significant networks, as well as new capital.

''Peter Thiel is one of the world's most successful technology investors. He and his team bring a considerable track record of expertise and resources. For young New Zealand technology companies, Valar Ventures' presence in the New Zealand market is a significant opportunity,'' she said.

''Alongside a scarcity of investment capital, the biggest challenge facing early-stage New Zealand technology companies is breaking into international markets. For web-based technology companies especially, the major market is the US. That is where Valar Ventures' networks, whether in Silicon Valley or on Wall Street, will be significant.''

Thiel said New Zealand was an attractive investment proposition. ''Over the last several years, New Zealand has been nurturing more early-stage tech companies.''

Valar spokesman Andrew McCormack said it had seen how much New Zealand's start-up ecosystem was flourishing through its work with globally focused technology companies like Wellington-based Xero.

''We were drawn to invest in New Zealand because of the vision and hard work of entrepreneurs like Sam Morgan and Rod Drury, incubators such as the Icehouse, and government initiatives like NZVIF.''

Manzullo loses Illinois primary race; Jackson wins

CHICAGO (AP) ? U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo, a 10-term Illinois Republican, lost a heated primary battle on Tuesday, as U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson easily won the Democratic nomination and an Iraq war veteran was chosen to face a tea party firebrand in November.

Manzullo and Jackson faced the toughest primary battles of their careers, and a new congressional map, which dramatically reshaped partisan territory in Illinois, added to the intensity.

With 97 percent of precincts reporting, Jackson had 71 percent of the votes, while his challenger, former one-term U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, had around 29 percent. Halvorson called Jackson to concede after the intense primary season which featured numerous attack ads on both sides.

"I had to take it very seriously," Jackson told The Associated Press Tuesday night. "I never take an opponent lightly. She put up a very, very strong challenge."

But Manzullo said he wouldn't concede to freshmen U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger until all the votes were counted. With 87 percent of precincts reporting, Kinzinger, a former Air Force pilot, had 56 percent compared with about 44 percent for Manzullo.

Meanwhile, Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth won a primary contest over former Illinois deputy treasurer Raja Krishnamoorthi in Chicago's suburbs and will run against outspoken Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh in November.

Voters also determined the fall match-up for the state's only open congressional seat, which is being vacated by the retirement of U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, the longest-serving Democrat in the state's U.S. House delegation. Republican lumber businessman Jason Plummer and Democratic former regional schools superintendent Brad Harriman will be on the ballot.

Democrats say they could gain as many as five new seats in Illinois come November, pushing them closer to regaining the U.S. House. But Republicans say they're poised to pick up a seat in the southern half of the state and can successfully defend challenges to the five GOP congressmen who won in 2010 during a Republican surge in Illinois.

Republicans will lose at least one congressman because the state lost a congressional seat in the remap ? from 19 to 18 ? and the incumbent matchup in north-central Illinois.

Manzullo and Kinzinger, who received an endorsement from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in 2010 and was among the five GOP freshmen elected two years ago, were locked in an intense primary due to redistricting.

Kinzinger's old district was split in the remap, which was handled by Democrats and carved out territory in their favor. He decided to run against Manzullo, who is currently serving in the 16th Congressional District. The district is one of Illinois' most conservative pockets, curving from the Wisconsin border to the Indiana line and including farms, far flung Chicago suburbs and manufacturing communities.

No Democrats ran in the Tuesday primary, so Kinzinger will almost certainly head back to Washington.

The primary for Jackson, who first took office in 1995, was the most intense of his career. The son of the civil rights activist mounted an aggressive primary fight with Halvorson as she has made questions about his ethics central to her campaign. While he has denied any wrongdoing, the House Ethics Committee is investigating Jackson's ties to imprisoned ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

However, the issue appeared to resonate little with voters who cited his long experience in the district which extends from neighborhoods on Chicago's South Side, its south suburbs and beyond.

"Jesse Jackson Jr. has been in my community for a long time and I support him," said Oscar Dixon, 63, of Chicago. "He's like a family member... He really delivers for me."

Duckworth, an Army helicopter pilot who lost both her legs in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in 2004, focused her victory on Walsh. The tea party candidate has been in the spotlight for criticizing President Barack Obama. Duckworth called him an extreme voice for the district which is one of the most diverse on the congressional map and spans several northwest Chicago suburbs.

"I spent my entire adult life in service to this nation and I would be honored to continue that service as a member of Congress," she told supporters at her suburban victory party.

Higher taxes to cut deficit? No, thanks

By Allison Linn

The federal deficit may be a problem, but most taxpayers don't seem to think it's their problem.

A new Rasmussen Reports poll finds that only about a quarter?of Americans would be willing to pay more taxes to help reduce the federal deficit. Nearly two-thirds of those polled said they would not be willing to pay more taxes to reduce the?deficit.

The poll of 1,000 adults was conducted earlier this month.?

The results put Warren Buffett in the minority. Last August the billionaire investor famously called on Congress to stop ?coddling? the super-rich -- himself included -- and raise taxes on them to help bring the deficit under control.

Many Americans, however,?appear to be fine with the likes of Buffett paying more taxes. ?A separate poll, released a few months ago by Pew Research Center, found that most Americans believe the biggest problem with taxes is that the wealthy don?t pay their fair share.

If you are feeling like you want to do more to pay down the nation?s debt, there is a way you can do that. The Bureau of Public debt accepts donations.?

Would you pay more taxes to help pay down the federal deficit?
