MOSCOW (Reuters) - Demonstrators, some chanting racist slogans, vandalized a shopping center and scuffled with police in a Moscow neighborhood on Sunday after the killing of a young man that residents blamed on a migrant from the Caucasus.
Protests over the death in the southern Biryulyovo district began peacefully until a group of young men began smashing windows in the shopping center.
The crowd grew to number several thousand and demonstrators scuffled with police when they tried to make arrests, a Reuters witness said. Pictures showed at least one policeman with minor injuries and video footage showed a car and rubbish bins overturned in the streets.
Later the crowd moved from the shopping center and overran a vegetable warehouse where, according to residents, many migrants from the Caucasus and Central Asia are employed.
A video posted on Youtube showed several men chanting "White Power!" and "Russia forward!" as they were forcing their way into the shopping center. Interfax news agency quoted Moscow police as saying around 200 people were detained.
The protesters began with demands for more action from law enforcement officials after an unidentified assailant fatally stabbed the 25-year-old man who was walking home with his girlfriend on Thursday night.
Russia's top investigative agency said it was looking into the killing.
Persistent tension between ethnic Russians and migrants and others with roots in the Caucasus and central Asia has occasionally erupted into violence in Moscow and other cities.
President Vladimir Putin said earlier this month that Russia needed migrant laborers in industries such as construction but - in a nod to anti-migrant sentiment - suggested their numbers could be restricted in other sectors, including trade.

Worldwide shipments of personal computers fell in the third quarter of the year, the sixth straight quarter of decline as cheaper tablet computers and smartphones cut into demand, according to market research firms IDC and Gartner.
IDC said the market fell nearly 8 percent, to 81.6 million units, while Gartner put the decline at almost 9 percent, to 80.3 million. The two firms define PCs slightly differently.
IDC expects that the PC market will hit bottom sometime next year, with a recovery starting in 2015 as companies and consumers finally replace aging PCs. Gartner says this year will be the worst, with flat shipments next year and single-digit percentage growth in 2015.
"There's sort of a rubber band effect where PCs that need to be replaced will be," said IDC senior analyst Jay Chou.
Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said that in developed countries, consumers won't abandon PCs, though they are holding onto them longer and spending money on other gadgets before replacing them. "The overall market size will shrink, but at some point those old PCs will be replaced by new ones," she said.
The U.S. market emerged as a bright spot in both reports. IDC said the U.S. market was almost unchanged, while Gartner said it rose 3.5 percent. Gartner credited low supplies and Intel's new low-power Haswell line of chips with helping boost demand. IDC said falling prices of touch-enabled laptops also helped.
The outlook for a stabilizing PC market was mirrored by Hewlett-Packard, the world's No. 2 PC maker behind Lenovo. In a presentation before analysts Wednesday, the company predicted "stabilizing revenue declines" for its upcoming fiscal year, which starts in November.
The top 3 PC sellers — Lenovo, HP and Dell — all grew shipments between zero and 3 percent during the quarter, thanks in part to a healthy U.S. market, both research firms said. Acer and Asus suffered steep declines.
IDC said Acer and Asus suffered declines of about 34 percent, while Gartner pegged the drop at nearly 23 percent.

Professor Peter Vekilov received a grant from NASA to study how proteins in a liquid solution nucleate, or form crystals. While researchers understand how crystals grow, they want to know more about how they transform from liquid to crystal.
Vekilov discovered in 2004 that before forming a crystal, proteins in a solution come together in dense droplets, where they possibly begin to unfold into the shape they have when crystalized.
His theory was proved through direct observation three years later, but there is still much about this phenomenon that is not understood. For example, crystallization processes that work well in a small volume of solution often do not work at all when scaled up to industrial-size levels of 100 or 1,000 liters the amounts used to produce medicines, chemicals and other products.
Vekilov believes this is largely due to sheer flow, meaning the uneven flow of liquid in a system, such as a river. But he cannot effectively test his theory on earth because gravity affects sheer flow.
NASA awarded Vekilov a grant of nearly $100,000 to further his research in space.
"We have relevant scientific questions that can only be answered by doing experiments in space. We hope to see a difference between the nucleation rate on earth and in space," Vekilov said.
His experiments will be performed by astronauts affiliated with the European Space Agency, most likely in 2016. Meanwhile, Vekilov and his European collaborators will build instrumentation and conduct additional research on nucleation and sheer flow to gather data and develop better models of the process.
Vekilov hopes to develop a deep understanding of sheer flow's impact on protein crystal nucleation, which can be used to design small-scale experiments that mirror the sheer flow in industrial-scale crystal production. As a result, it will be easier to scale up lab work to large volumes.
