If Game of Thrones Characters Were on Facebook

By now, it's pretty much a fact that everyone uses Facebook (pipe down if you don't). It's also pretty much a fact that everyone watches Game of Thrones too (shut up if you don't). But what if the characters in Game of Thrones started using Facebook? It would be so hilarious More »

Looking back on one full year since Instagram for Android launched

Android Central

One year on, almost half of all Instagram use comes from Android

Today marks exactly one full year of Instagram on Android. The hipster filter, photo dedicated social network has its fans, and its critics alike. Love it or hate it, it's one of those 'must have' apps for a mobile platform -- just take a look at the number of BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone users screaming out for it. To mark the year, the Instagram team has shared some numbers with us.

Despite the critics, despite the whole #TeamAndroid and #TeamiPhone deal back in the early days, Instagram for Android is booming. Booming to the point where almost half of all use comes from the Android app. Less than a day after launch the app had been downloaded 1 million times, and to date has in excess of 50 million downloads.

Also in that year since we saw the Android launch, there was of course the much debated Facebook takeover that priced Instagram at $1billion. In fact, the Android launch and Facebook takeover all happened within the same week.

Over on the official Instagram blog, the developers have highlighted some pretty awesome looking snaps taken using Instagram for Android, so be sure to head on over and check them out.

Wall Street falls after factory data, last week's records

By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Monday in one of the lightest volume days of the year, pulling back after the S&P 500's record closing high last week and after weaker-than-expected manufacturing data.

Apple was the biggest drag on both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 <.ndx>, falling 3.1 percent to $428.91. Fidelity Contrafund, a $92 billion fund that is the largest active shareholder in Apple, reported that it cut its stake in the iPhone maker by 10 percent during the first two months of 2013.

Data showed factory activity grew at the slowest rate in three months in March, suggesting the economy lost some momentum at the end of the first quarter.

Recent data that has pointed to a strengthening economy has helped push stocks to record highs on both the Dow and S&P 500. The S&P 500 ended March with a record closing high and posted its best quarterly performance in a year, while the Dow broke into new record territory in early March.

"It was very difficult for the S&P 500 technically to break through that high level and to even close there, so it doesn't surprise me that today is a down day," said Brian Amidei, managing director at HighTower Advisors in Palm Desert, California. "I think there's a lot of resistance at the 1,565 level."

The benchmark S&P index remains below its record intraday high of 1,576.09. Moves may be limited this week in the absence of major catalysts before the closely watched U.S. monthly payrolls report on Friday.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 5.69 points, or 0.04 percent, at 14,572.85. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 7.02 points, or 0.45 percent, at 1,562.17. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 28.35 points, or 0.87 percent, at 3,239.17.

Volume was second-lowest of the year, with roughly 5.16 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT. That compares with the 2012 average daily closing volume of about 6.45 billion. Decliners outpaced advancers on the NYSE by nearly 7 to 3 and on the Nasdaq by nearly 3 to 1.

For the year, the S&P is up 9.5 percent, the Dow is up 11.2 percent and the Nasdaq is up 7.3 percent.

With the strong start to the year, many investors have been anticipating a pullback. Uncertainty over the economic future of Cyprus has weighed on stocks in recent sessions. European markets were closed on Monday for a holiday.

Among the day's biggest gainers, Tesla Motors Inc surged 15.9 percent to $43.93 after forecasting full profitability in the first quarter, citing strong sales of its Model S sedan.

Decliners included Dell Inc , which warned that it would be dangerous to take on a lot of debt and remain a public company given its worsening profit outlook, in a sign that it views proposals from Blackstone Group LP and billionaire investor Carl Icahn as fraught with risk.

Shares of Dell dipped 0.2 percent to $14.30. Dell's comments came on Friday, a holiday for U.S. markets.

In the day's economic data, the Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity fell to 51.3 last month from 54.2 in February. A reading above 50 indicates expansion in the manufacturing sector.

A report from the Commerce Department showed construction spending rose more than expected in February, gaining 1.2 percent, above forecasts of a 1 percent rise.

After the close, shares of BGC Partners were up 42.3 percent at $5.48 after news of the sale of its eSpeed platform to Nasdaq OMX Group .

Also, shares of health insurers rallied after the bell as planned cuts in U.S. government payments for private Medicare Advantage insurers did not materialize.

Shares of Humana , which derives about two-thirds of its revenue from Medicare Advantage business, rose 9 percent to $81.75 in after-hours trading.

Finding Nemo 2 Now Titled Finding Dory

finding-dory-slice-1

Whether you agree or disagree with the wisdom of creating a sequel to Finding Nemo, the film is happening, and now it has an official title.? Disney-Pixar has announced that the new film will be entitled Finding Dory, and will be released on November 25, 2015.? As the title implies, the new movie will have a lot more of the forgetful fish (Ellen DeGeneres), and according to director Andrew Stanton, ?One thing we couldn?t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In Finding Dory, she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way.?? The new movie will take place one year after the events of the first movie, and will bring back not only Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo, but also the Tank Gang as well as other characters.? The story will also take place partially along the California coastline.

Going back and watching Finding Nemo last year, I fell in love with Dory all over again, and her line, ?When I?m with you, I?m home,? makes me tear up every time.? Although Pixar recently went on a streak of sequels and prequels (Toy Story 3, Cars 2, and Monsters University), Finding Dory will be their first sequel after the original features The Good Dinosaur (May 30, 2014) and the Untitled Movie That Takes You Inside the Mind (June 19, 2015).? I also wouldn?t be surprised if Pixar ultimately pushes Finding Dory behind Lee Unkrich?s Untitled Dia de los Muertos movie, which is currently slated for 2016.? Hit the jump for the press release. [Update: We've updated the article with a video of DeGeneres announcing the film.]

Ellen DeGeneres, the Voice of the Beloved Blue Tang Fish in 2003?s ?Finding Nemo,? Shares Plans for the All-New Big-Screen Adventure

BURBANK, Calif. (April 2, 2013) ? When Dory said ?just keep swimming? in 2003?s Oscar?-winning film ?Finding Nemo,? she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney?Pixar?s ?Finding Dory??an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theaters on Nov. 25, 2015.

?I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,? said DeGeneres. ?I?m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating ?Toy Story 16.? But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It?s got a lot of heart, it?s really funny, and the best part is?it?s got a lot more Dory.?

Director and Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton takes audiences back to the extraordinary underwater world created in the original film. ?There is no Dory without Ellen,? said Stanton. ?She won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world?not to mention our team here at Pixar. One thing we couldn?t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In ?Finding Dory,? she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way.?

According to Stanton, ?Finding Dory? takes place about a year after the first film, and features returning favorites Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang, among others. Set in part along the California coastline, the story also welcomes a host of new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of Dory?s life.

?Finding Nemo? won the 2003 Academy Award? for Best Animated Feature; the film was nominated for three additional Oscars? (Best Writing, Original Screenplay; Best Music, Original Score; Best Sound Editing). It was also nominated for a Golden Globe? Award for Best Motion Picture?Comedy or Musical. In 2008, the American Film Institute named ?Finding Nemo? among the top 10 greatest animated films ever made. At the time of its release, ?Finding Nemo? was the highest grossing G-rated movie of all time. It?s currently the fourth highest grossing animated film worldwide. The film has more than 16 million Likes on Facebook, and Dory?with more than 24 million?is the most Liked individual character from a Disney or Disney?Pixar film.

DeGeneres? distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film and in the literary world. Her syndicated talk show, ?The Ellen DeGeneres Show,? is in its 10th season and has earned 38 Daytime Emmy? Awards. DeGeneres has won 12 People?s Choice Awards and the Teen Choice Award for Choice Comedian for three consecutive years. Additionally, her show won two Genesis Awards and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Talk Show Episode. For her unforgettable turn as Dory, DeGeneres was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance.

Shuffling the Deck: Death | Milagro Roots

death

Ai! I have taken a couple of months off from the Shuffling the Deck series and recently remembered that it was time to pick it back up again?but with a few changes. Because ritual forms such a huge part of what I do, each new entry will include ritual suggestions & inspirations specific to the card at hand. I am also adding in some astrological considerations to each card and a poem of prayer that invokes the specific energy and presence of the card.

Card: Death
Number: 13
Planetary Ruler: Pluto
Zodiac sign: Scorpio
Season: late fall through early Winter and the celebration of Halloween, All Soul?s Day, Samhaim, Dia de los Muertos

Maybe its because I?m born on the 13th of maybe its because Pluto features strongly in my natal chart, but the Death card has always been one of my favorites. Its themes include:

Meanings:

Death-literally or figuratively
Descent into the Underworld
Initiation
Equalizing forces-Death and taxes!
The Death card is a wake up call. It reminds us that physical death is imminent and unavoidable and compels us to think, if only for a moment, on whether or not we are living as brightly as we might. This is a question for each one of us-rich, poor, black, white, brown, or red, woman, man, and those in between-because we each must face death it is a great equalizer-we are all on a level field.

As we settle into that question we consider what parts of our life might be in the process of dying back-and whether they are making room for more of the same or for something precious and worthwhile. Death symbolizes endings, it is final, it is done-it brings the possibility of closure to experiences that may be dragging out for too long sucking at our life force and creativity.

And finally, Death is communion, especially when we come out of (or to) a tradition that honors the ancestors who have gone before and seeks to learn from them.?

Rituals:

Honoring and listening to your dead-your ancestors and those of your lineage. You can do this by building an altar for your ancestors, visiting a graveyard where family members are buried and keeping up the grave sites, or simply by displaying old photos of deceased family members around your home so that you become more aware of their presence?and wisdom.

Working with Deities whose domain is the underworld-Kali, Ereshkigal, Hades, Porserpina, Dummuzi, Hel, Hekate, Santisima Muerte, Anima Sola. If Death is around you, if you feel like you are going through an underworld descent then learning about the Deities that preside over the underworld-and seeking their aid-is a wise course of action.

Culling-one can cull a herd of animals, a garden, or the attic-the process is inherently the same. We begin the culling process by asking the question: what needs to be allowed to die back, get harvested, be slaughtered so that new life may emerge?

Poetic Prayer:

This beautiful poem from by Pablo Neruda captures the first meaning of the death card beautifully:

You start dying slowly
if you do not travel,
if you do not read,
If you do not listen to the sounds of life,
If you do not appreciate yourself.

You start dying slowly
When you kill your self-esteem;
When you do not let others help you.
You start dying slowly
If you become a slave of your habits,
Walking everyday on the same paths?
If you do not change your routine,
If you do not wear different colours
Or you do not speak to those you don?t know.
You start dying slowly
If you avoid to feel passion
And their turbulent emotions;
Those which make your eyes glisten
And your heart beat fast.

You start dying slowly
If you do not change your life when you are not satisfied with your job, or with your love,
If you do not risk what is safe for the uncertain,
If you do not go after a dream,
If you do not allow yourself,
At least once in your lifetime,
To run away from sensible advice?

Andmade Share: For a more robust sharing menu

Andmade Share

The native Android sharing intents are extremely powerful, but that doesn't mean you can't shoehorn more functionality in there

Andmade Share takes the already functional sharing intents found on every Android phone, and makes them even more capable with a new set of features. Instead of choosing to share to a single app or service, with Andmade Share you can select multiple services together. We wish the apps could just talk together and make this easy on users, but since that's unlikely to happen tools like this will save the day.

US Patent And Trademark Office Denies Apple's iPad Mini Trademark Application, Deemed ?Merely Descriptive?

ipad-with-ipad-miniRight after it launched the iPad mini, Apple filed a trademark application for the name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). As Patently Apple noticed earlier today, however, the USPTO has now refused Apple’s trademark filing because, the reviewer argues, “the applied-for mark merely describes a feature or characteristic of applicant?s goods.” The refusal was mailed to Apple on January 24, but only made public in the last few days. “The applied-for mark merely describes a feature or characteristic of applicant?s goods.” The word ‘mini,’ the reviewer argues, just describes that the iPad mini is indeed “a small sized handheld tablet computer” and just describes the mini’s features. It is not, the reviewing attorney says, “a unitary mark with a unique, incongruous, or otherwise nondescriptive meaning in relation to the goods and/or services.” The USPTO would only grant apple the trademark to the full iPad mini name if the company coulhow that the word ‘mini’ has now acquired a “distinctiveness.” In addition, Patently Apple also notes, the reviewer also denied the application because Apple should have provided the USPTO with a specimen other than its own product website, even though Apple always uses these for its trademark applications and this was never a reason for a denial before. The reviewer also believes that there is a “likelihood of confusion” between Apple’s existing iPad trademarks and this new iPad? mini application, which, to be honest, doesn’t make a lot of sense. Here is the letter the USPTO sent to Apple in January: USPTO Refuses Apple’s iPad mini Trademark Application
