2 people injured in Chicago mall disturbance

CHICAGO (AP) ? A manager at a Chicago mall where the boy band Mindless Behavior signed autographs for fans says a disturbance that left two people with minor injuries was "totally unrelated" to the event.

Ford City Mall senior general manager John Sarama says a group of older youths caused Saturday's disturbance, not the young girls and parents who attended the boy band appearance.

Police spokesman Veejay Zala says multiple arrests were made but none for serious charges. He says officers evacuated the mall and closed it for the rest of the day.

Sarama says the Mindless Behavior event ended about 45 minutes before the disturbance. Fans who bought the group's new CD during a pre-sale were given posters for band members to sign.

The group's publicist couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Former NBA Stars Give Back to City Youth

High school basketball players from East, Central Tech, and Strong
Vincent had the once in a lifetime chance to be coached and mentored by former
Knicks stars Allan Houston and Larry Johnson. The special mentoring event took
place at the Erie Insurance Arena early Saturday afternoon.

Houston is the BayHawks general manager and used to play with Johnson. Johnson is in town for Affiliate Night at the arena. The BayHawks are an affiliate of the New York Knicks. Johnson was the first overall pick in the NBA draft back in 1991.

Both Houston and Johnson say it was great to come mentor these young athletes. In their mentoring session, the former NBA stars stressed how important it is for the young athletes to stay focused, and to work their hardest in all that they do, both on and off the court.

Hill-Murray football coach cited in Fridley prostitution sting

FRIDLEY, Minn. - The head coach of the Hill-Murray High School football team has been cited in connection with a prostitution sting in Fridley.

Mark Mauer, 54, of Woodbury, was one of 19 men and four women arrested in the two-day undercover sting at the Liveinn Hotel in Fridley. Police say the hotel's management knew of and cooperated with the undercover investigation.

The men are cited with a misdemeanor of solicitation and the women with a misdemeanor of prostitution.

Mark Mauer is a cousin of Minnesota Twins player Joe Mauer.

According to the Fridley Police reports, Mauer arrived at the hotel just before 7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, and allegedly agreed to pay an undercover officer $100 for a half hour of "full service."

Police allege Mauer found the prostitution ad on the website Backpage.com in the escort section.

Mauer did not answer when KARE 11 called him on his cell phone Friday, nor was he at his listed address in Woodbury.

Hill-Murray school officials would not comment on camera, but but the school's president Susan Paul released the statement below:

"I want to share with you some distressing news regarding our school and make you aware of an alleged incident involving Hill-Murray staff member and head football coach, Mark Mauer, that is being reported in the press. I want to be clear that this incident is not related in any way to Hill-Murray, our students, or Mr. Mauer's work responsibilities. Nor will this incident affect the high quality education that our families expect at Hill-Murray School. We ask for your prayers for all members of the Hill-Murray School community."

PlayStation 4 Controller

After months of rumor and speculation, Sony has revealed its new game machine ? the PlayStation 4 ? as well as a new controller with a touch... Read more

Today's Sony event announcing the PlayStation 4 brought confirmation to rumors of a sophisticated new controller that integrates traditional and motion controls in the same device.

The Dual Shock 4 controller looks more or less like the leaked pictures seen in recent leaks. It's similar to the old dual-stick setup with directional pad and buttons, but it adds a couple new features: A touchpad like the PlayStation Vita's on the front, and a light bar that acts both as a player indicator and a PlayStation Move-like motion controller.

There's a stereo camera that tracks the controller, but apparently not the players themselves. Also added was a "share" button that allows instantaneous review of the last few minutes of gameplay, from which the player can select a portion to upload. A live demonstration of how easy this is drew applause from the audience at the event.

Sony claims to have improved both latency and the rumble function, so you'll have more responsive controls and more forceful feedback. A headphone jack completes the package, making headphone gaming easier.

One last bonus: If someone else is using the TV, you can stream games to the PlayStation Vita and use that as a controller instead.

Mozilla_Nightly_icon_2011WebRTC, the plugin-free real-time video, audio and text chat protocol most browser vendors now support, is now activated by default in the latest bleeding edge Firefox Nightly release. While Mozilla has long backed WebRTC, it was only available as an option in the Nightly releases so far. Now that it is enabled by default, chances are that it will slowly make its way into the stable release channel over the next few months.

Restaurant Review ? Chambao El Vizco, Durcal - Spanish Food ...

Chambao El Vizco

Chambao El Vizco

After eight years of trying, I know that dining out in Andalucia can resemble playing the lottery.

I have found that the most consistent factor when dining out in the south of Spain is the very inconsistency on offer. One week a restaurant serves a meal to remember for all the right reasons, the next week a disaster.

As you would expect, there are some notable exceptions to the rule.

Tucked just below the impressive former railway bridge at Durcal, south of Granada, is the Chambao El Vizco restaurant.

It only opens each Friday to Sunday and during local holidays. What it lacks for in days, it makes up for in hours, opening its doors at Noon and staying open until midnight.

It is set in nice gardens. This is a perfectly pleasant place to sit, read your newspaper, have a drink, enjoy some tasty tapas and watch the local wildlife.

Dining outside in warmer weather is not only possible, but is the option favoured by regulars. Even in the winter months.

It is only when the mosquitoes come out to play in August that it is wiser to dine inside the pleasant restaurant in which?the atmosphere is very relaxing and the service attentive.

Of course, one man?s meat is another man?s poison. On my last visit three people in the party of four chose to order the lamb. We were made aware of the fact that this would take time and were happy to sit outside with drinks and the tapas that, incidentally, are consistently good.

The lamb arrived eventually and was a little overcooked. That made a change. Too often on my culinary travels through Andalucia I have found myself asking for the meat to actually be cooked!

In the north of Spain puddings are imaginative and varied. In Andalucia they too often come out of a freezer cabinet in which the ice creams are kept. I have been served so very many postres that arrive at the table still frozen. I always give such restaurants the cold shoulder.

But at Chambao El Vizco I was served a very good Tiramisu that truly had been made in someone?s home. Whose, I do not know. But it was not out of the chill cabinet and tasted all the better for it.

The total meal including the overdone lamb, a serving of moussaka, puddings and liqueurs came to a whopping 112 euros.?I guess that, in the case of Chambao El Vizco, they have to make up for the fact that in most weeks, they only open for three days.

I have had better meals in the city of Granada for less. I am often surprised in Spain at how menus in the provinces can be as expensive, if not more so, than in a city.

To me, a London boy, that doesn?t make any sense. Restaurants in villages and towns should be charging less for main courses such as steak or lamb than their competitors in the nearest city centre.

But Chambao El Vizco is a nice place to sit outside in the shade on a sunny day and have some lighter meals, or snacks with a drink. And there are some splendid walks to enjoy in beautiful countryside just outside the restaurant entrance.

UFC London: Barao vs. McDonald

Updated?Feb 16, 2013 8:28 PM ET

?

Renan Barao has become nearly as bold as his record.

Unbeaten since 2005, a fourth-round submission of Michael McDonald allowed the Brazilian Barao to retain the interim UFC bantamweight title at UFC on Fuel TV 7 inside London?s Wembley Arena on Saturday.

?Dominick Cruz, I?m waiting for you,? the normally reserved Barao said through an interpreter in the post-fight televised interview. ?Please come (back) quick.?

Cruz is the bantamweight titleholder who has been sidelined since October 2011 with two serious knee injuries. There?s been no timetable for Cruz?s return, although he told viewers he?s not concerned over Barao whenever he makes it back inside the Octagon.

?Enjoy the back-to-back titles,? Cruz said on the Fuel TV post-fight show. ?The truth is that I?m the champ and I can?t wait to get in and fight the guy. I?m excited, man. He?s so good. He brings so many different tools. It?s a different challenge than I?ve ever faced. I?m coming back from these injuries and it makes it an even tougher task.?

Cruz, however, said earlier in the broadcast, Barao was ?going to be confused when he gets in there.?

McDonald (15-2) looked like he took control in the later portions of the first round with repeated right hands to Barao?s temple. While Barao crumpled, he did recover and returned some strikes of his own as he extricated himself.

A fairly even second round included a stoppage after McDonald?s right eye was caught with an accidental poke with Barao?s left hand. A cut near Barao?s right eye also became apparent in the round. The third round contained little action, minus a spinning kick by Barao that found McDonald?s face and bloodied his nose.

This fight was the first time McDonald went past three rounds, ground that Barao covered when he took the interim title with a decision win over Urijah Faber in July. McDonald looked winded as the fight went on and Barao maintained his activity level with kicks and takedowns ? successfully avoiding situations that would allow McDonald to counter.

Barao (30-1) landed one of those takedowns with about two minutes left in the fourth round. He eventually put McDonald on his back and applied an arm-triangle choke, a hold wrenched down for more than 30 seconds before McDonald tapped out.

?There was no doubt he?s a young, talented athlete,? Barao said of McDonald. ?He?s a tough guy, but all fights were tough in the past. He was just another tough opponent I had to encounter.?

On the undercard, Gunnar Nelson remained undefeated with a unanimous victory over Jorge Santiago (29-28, 29-28, 30-27), although it was hardly overwhelming. Santiago ? who replaced Justin Edwards on the card ? hung with Nelson much of the fight even as Nelson got in a few good strikes.

Santiago rallied in the third and final round, even landing a solid punch to Nelson?s face. The strike, however, came just before the fight?s conclusion.

Cub Swanson used some precision strikes and some late takedowns for a unanimous decision win (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) over Dustin Poirier in a bout that was active from the start. It was Swanson?s fourth victory in a row as he continued his rise up the featherweight ranks.

Jimi Manuwa had the first stoppage victory on the Fuel TV portion of the undercard, although it came between rounds. Cyrille Diabate injured his left leg in the first round, apparently on a Manuwa takedown. After medical personnel evaluated the lower portion of his leg, Diabate was unable to continue. Manuwa improved to 13-0 as a pro, 2-0 in the UFC.

James Te Huna earned a unanimous decision victory (29-27, 29-28, 29-28) over Ryan Jimmo. It was Te Huna?s fourth UFC win in a row as he continues his ascent in the light heavyweight divisions.

Matthew Riddle defeated Che Mills via a split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27) to open up the Fuel TV portion of the undercard. The score was closer than the fight itself as Riddle controlled much of the action.

Artificial atoms and bonds provide a new set of building blocks for future materials

Northwestern University's Chad A. Mirkin, a world-renowned leader in nanotechnology research and its application, has developed a completely new set of building blocks that is based on nanoparticles and DNA. Using these tools, scientists will be able to build -- from the bottom up, just as nature does -- new and useful structures.

Mirkin will discuss his research in a session titled "Nucleic Acid-Modified Nanostructures as Programmable Atom Equivalents: Forging a New Periodic Table" at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in Boston. The presentation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in Room 302 of the Hynes Convention Center.

"We have a new set of building blocks," Mirkin said. "Instead of taking what nature gives you, we can control every property of the new material we make. We've always had this vision of building matter and controlling architecture from the bottom up, and now we've shown it can be done."

Using nanoparticles and DNA, Mirkin has built more than 200 different crystal structures with 17 different particle arrangements. Some of the lattice types can be found in nature, but he also has built new structures that have no naturally occurring mineral counterpart.

Mirkin is the George B. Rathmann Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and professor of medicine, chemical and biological engineering, biomedical engineering and materials science and engineering. He is director of Northwestern's International Institute for Nanotechnology.

Mirkin can make new materials and arrangements of particles by controlling the size, shape, type and location of nanoparticles within a given particle lattice. He has developed a set of design rules that allow him to control almost every property of a material.

New materials developed using his method could help improve the efficiency of optics, electronics and energy storage technologies. "These same nanoparticle building blocks have already found wide-spread commercial utility in biology and medicine as diagnostic probes for markers of disease," Mirkin added.

With this present advance, Mirkin uses nanoparticles as "atoms" and DNA as "bonds." He starts with a nanoparticle, which could be gold, silver, platinum or a quantum dot, for example. The core material is selected depending on what physical properties the final structure should have.

He then attaches hundreds of strands of DNA (oligonucleotides) to the particle. The oligonucleotide's DNA sequence and length determine how bonds form between nanoparticles and guide the formation of specific crystal lattices.

"This constitutes a completely new class of building blocks in materials science that gives you a type of programmability that is extraordinarily versatile and powerful," Mirkin said. "It provides nanotechnologists for the first time the ability to tailor properties of materials in a highly programmable way from the bottom up."

Unable to secure an invitation to address NBA players directly, embattled union executive director Billy Hunter has released online his response to a report that criticized his leadership. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer, FIle)

HOUSTON (AP) ? Billy Hunter was ousted from his job as executive director of the union in a unanimous vote by NBA players who said Saturday they will "no longer be divided, misled, misinformed."

"This is our union and we have taken it back," players' association president Derek Fisher said.

Fisher said it was a day of change for the union, which has seemed inevitable since a review of the union last month was critical of Hunter's leadership and urged players to consider whether they wanted to keep him.

They didn't.

"We want to make it clear that we are here to serve only the best interests of the players," Fisher said. "No threats, no lies, no distractions will stop us from serving our memberships."

Hunter said in a statement that he hadn't received word of his dismissal and blasted the interim executive committee for the process it followed, saying "certain individuals made sure the outcome was pre-ordained."

"In addition, given the legitimate legal and governance questions surrounding the eligibility of the members who voted and the adherence, or lack thereof, to the constitution and bylaws, I do not consider today's vote the end, only a different beginning," Hunter said. "My legal representatives and I will resume communication with the NBPA to determine how to best move forward in the best interests of all parties."

In brief remarks, Fisher said a new executive committee was elected and he will remain as president. The Spurs' Matt Bonner is vice president, Miami's James Jones is secretary-treasurer and the Nets' Jerry Stackhouse the first vice president. The Clippers' Chris Paul, Golden State's Stephen Curry, Denver's Andre Iguodala, the Hornets' Roger Mason, Jr. and the Clippers' Willie Green are vice presidents.

Hunter had led the union since 1996, guiding the players through three collective bargaining agreements and helping bring their average salaries to more than $5 million, highest in team sports. But Fisher pushed for the review after a falling out between the two leaders, and though it found Hunter wasn't guilty of any criminal activity involving union funds, it cited a number of conflicts of interests and poor choices that led the players to remove him.

Commissioner David Stern was aware of the union's actions but had little comment.

"We await notification from the union as to who we should be dealing with because it has been a principle of faith with us that we will deal with whomever the union tells us to deal with," Stern said.

Released in January, the review conducted by the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP criticized Hunter for hiring family members and friends. It said he knew his 2010 contract extension wasn't properly ratified by union rules, and raised questions about everything from travel expenses to the amount he spent on gifts.

Players acted quickly, putting Hunter on a leave of absence on Feb. 1. He hoped to be invited to Saturday's annual meeting, which included about 35 players, superstar LeBron James among them.

But Hunter's attorneys said their client was told he wouldn't be welcomed. They said his contract was legal and indicated there could be a lawsuit if the players removed him and attempted to withhold the more than $10 million that remains on his salary.

"We do not doubt that this process will possibly continue in an ugly way," said Fisher, who then reminded reporters that there are three ongoing government investigations into Hunter, likely the reason he didn't take questions after his remarks.

It's a swift fall for the 70-year-old Hunter, a former athlete who was well-respected by many players. But agents didn't like him, questioning his bargaining strategies and frustrated they didn't have a bigger role in his union.

Hunter's family did, and that was another central issue of the report. He had since fired his daughter and daughter-in-law, and cut ties with a financial institution that employed his son. He also instituted an anti-nepotism policy at the NPBA.

"After 17 years of representing NBA players during CBA negotiations and defending their rights in other proceedings, not once was there an occasion where one side was denied an opportunity to be heard," Hunter said. "The current interim regime in control of the NBPA has set a terrible precedent for the union. It violates every tenet of fairness upon which the union was founded. Now that this has occurred, I will continue to examine all of my options, including whether the fairness that was absent from the NBPA process might be available in a different forum."

Fisher, Paul, Bonner, Mason and Jones were holdovers from the previous executive committee. Stackhouse, who along with James was vocal during the meeting, joins Iguodala, Curry and Green among the newcomers.

Fisher and Hunter clashed during the 2011 lockout and their fractured relationship divided the union. Hunter originally persuaded the executive committee to vote to request Fisher's resignation last year. Fisher did not resign and instead pushed for the outside review, which lasted more than eight months and cost the union more than $4 million.

The law firm reviewed NBPA documents and emails, and interviewed more than three dozen witnesses. It found that Hunter spent more than $100,000 on gifts for executive committee members ? including a watch worth more than $20,000 for Fisher before their falling out ? and accepted a payout of $1.3 million for unused vacation time when records made it unclear how his time off was kept.

Fisher remains president even though he isn't on an NBA roster, having asked the Dallas Mavericks for his release after a brief stint earlier this season. He gave no update on what would happen to the executive director position. Union attorney Ron Klempner was appointed to the position on an interim basis when Hunter was placed on leave.

London Tube Adventure

Mrs. Tishell and I are staying at a hotel less than a two minute walk from Trafalgar Square....and the Charring Cross tube station. I can see Big Ben from my window.....and can just catch a glimpse of The Eye if I look way over to the left....but back to the tube....

This morning we headed up to the Tube......but first we were going to have breakfast at..

The Crypt....a restaurant in, well the crypt, under St Martin in the Fields church.

Breakfast was great...

And the location unique!

We got there early.....and it had started to fill up before we left.
Then it was onto the tube for some retail therapy on Oxford and Regent Streets.

The Hyundai Motor Company () (, , modernity; ) is a South Korean multinational automaker headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. Hyundai was founded in 1967 and it, along with Kia, together comprise the Hyundai Motor Group, which is the world's fourth largest automobile manufacturer based on annual vehicle sales in 2010. In 2008, Hyundai (without Kia) ranked as the eighth largest automaker. In 2010, Hyundai sold over 3.6?million vehicles worldwide.

Hyundai operates the world's largest integrated automobile manufacturing facility in Ulsan, which is capable of producing 1.6?million units annually. The company employs about 75,000 persons worldwide. Hyundai vehicles are sold in 193 countries through some 6,000 dealerships and showrooms.

History

Chung Ju-Yung founded the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company in 1947. Hyundai Motor Company was later established in 1967. The company's first model, the Cortina, was released in cooperation with Ford Motor Company in 1968. When Hyundai wanted to develop their own car, they hired George Turnbull, the former Managing Director of Austin Morris at British Leyland. He in turn hired five other top British car engineers. They were Kenneth Barnett body design, engineers John Simpson and Edward Chapman, John Crosthwaite ex-BRM as chassis engineer and Peter Slater as chief development engineer. In 1975, the Pony, the first Korean car, was released, with styling by Giorgio Giugiaro of ItalDesign and powertrain technology provided by Japan's Mitsubishi Motors. Exports began in the following year to Ecuador and soon thereafter to the Benelux countries.

In 1984, Hyundai exported the Pony to Canada, but not to the United States, because the Pony didn't pass emissions standards there. Canadian sales greatly exceeded expectations, and it was at one point the top-selling car on the Canadian market. The Pony afforded a much higher degree of quality and refinement in the lowest price auto segment than the Eastern-bloc imports of the period then available. In 1985, the one millionth Hyundai car was built.

In 1986, Hyundai began to sell cars in the United States, and the Excel was nominated as "Best Product #10" by Fortune magazine, largely because of its affordability. The company began to produce models with its own technology in 1988, beginning with the midsize Sonata. In the spring of 1990, aggregate production of Hyundai automobiles reached the four million mark. In 1991, the company succeeded in developing its first proprietary gasoline engine, the four-cylinder Alpha, and also its own transmission, thus paving the way for technological independence.

In 1996, Hyundai Motor India Limited was established with a production plant in Irungattukottai near Chennai, India.

In 1998, Hyundai began to overhaul its image in an attempt to establish itself as a world-class brand. Chung Ju Yung transferred leadership of Hyundai Motor to his son, Chung Mong Koo, in 1999. Hyundai's parent company, Hyundai Motor Group, invested heavily in the quality, design, manufacturing, and long-term research of its vehicles. It added a 10-year or warranty to cars sold in the United States and launched an aggressive marketing campaign.

In 2004, Hyundai was ranked second in "initial quality" in a survey/study by J.D. Power and Associates. Hyundai is now one of the top 100 most valuable brands worldwide. Since 2002, Hyundai has also been one of the worldwide official sponsors of the FIFA World Cup.

In 2006, the South Korean government initiated an investigation of Chung Mong Koo's practices as head of Hyundai, suspecting him of corruption. On April 28, 2006, Chung was arrested, and charged for embezzlement of 100?billion South Korean won (US$106?million). As a result, Hyundai Vice Chairman and CEO, Kim Dong-jin, replaced him as head of the company.

On September 30, 2011, Yang Seung Suk announced his retirement as CEO of Hyundai Motor Co. In the interim replacement period, Chung Mong-koo and Kim Eok-jo will divide the duties of the CEO position.

Research and Development

Hyundai has 6 centres worldwide, located in Korea (three offices), Germany, Japan and India. Additionally, there is an American design center in California that develops designs for US markets.

Business

In 1998, after a shake-up in the Korean auto industry caused by overambitious expansion and the Asian financial crisis, Hyundai acquired rival Kia Motors. In 2000, the company established a strategic alliance with DaimlerChrysler and severed its partnership with the Hyundai Group. In 2001, the Daimler-Hyundai Truck Corporation was formed. In 2004, however, DaimlerChrysler divested its interest in the company by selling its 10.5% stake for $900?million.

Hyundai has invested in manufacturing plants in the North America, India, Czech Republic, Pakistan, China and Turkey as well as research and development centers in Europe, Asia, North America, and the Pacific Rim. In 2004, Hyundai Motor Company had $57.2?billion in sales in South Korea making it the country's second largest corporation, or chaebol. Worldwide sales in 2005 reached 2,533,695 units, an 11 percent increase over the previous year. In 2011, Hyundai sold 4.05 million cars worldwide and the Hyundai Motor Group was the world's fourth largest automoker behind GM, Volkswagen and Toyota - a distinction it earned when it surpassed Ford Auto Group in 2009. Hyundai vehicles are sold in 193 countries through some 5,000 dealerships.

The Hyundai brand power continues to rise as it was ranked 65th in the 2007 Best Global Brands by Interbrand and BusinessWeek survey, with brand value estimated at $5.0?billion. Public perception of the Hyundai brand has been transformed as a result of dramatic improvements in the quality of Hyundai vehicles. As of 2011, it is the world's fastest growing car brand for two years running.

Hyundai in North America

United States

Hyundai began selling cars in the United States on February 20, 1986, with a single model, the Hyundai Excel. The Excel was offered in a variety of trims and body styles. That year, Hyundai set a record of selling the most automobiles in its first year of business in the United States compared to any other car brand; total sales in 1986 were 168,882.

Initially well received, the Excel's faults soon became apparent; cost-cutting measures caused reliability to suffer. With an increasingly poor reputation for quality, Hyundai sales plummeted, and many dealerships either earned their profits on repairs or abandoned the product. At one point, Hyundai became the butt of many jokes (i.e. Hyundai stands for "Hope you understand nothing's driveable and inexpensive") and even made David Letterman's Top Ten Hilarious Mischief Night Pranks To Play In Space: No.8 ? Paste a "Hyundai" logo on the main control panel.

In response, Hyundai began investing heavily in the quality, design, manufacturing, and long-term research of its vehicles. It added a 10-year or powertrain warranty (known as the Hyundai challenge) to its vehicles sold in the United States. By 2004, sales had dramatically increased, and the reputation of Hyundai cars improved. In 2004, Hyundai tied with Honda for initial brand quality in a survey/study from J.D. Power and Associates, for having 102 problems per 1000 vehicles. This made Hyundai second in the industry, only behind Toyota, for initial vehicle quality. The company continued this tradition by placing third overall in J.D. Power's 2006 Initial Quality Survey, behind only Porsche and Lexus. Hyundai is ranked number 4 in World's Most Admired Companies under the motor vehicles section of CNN, after BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke), Volkswagen, and Daimler in 2011.

Hyundai continues to invest heavily in its American operations as its cars grow in popularity. In 1990, Hyundai established the Hyundai Design Center in Fountain Valley, California. The center moved to a new $30?million facility in Irvine, California in 2003, and was renamed the Hyundai Kia Motors Design and Technical Center. Besides the design studio, the facility also housed Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI, established in 1986), a subsidiary responsible for all engineering activities in the U.S. for Hyundai. Hyundai America Technical Center moved to its new , $117?million headquarters in Superior Township, Michigan (near Ann Arbor) in 2005. Later that same year, HATCI announced that it would be expanding its technical operations in Michigan and hiring 600 additional engineers and other technical employees over a period of five years. The center also has employees in California and Alabama.

Hyundai incorporated a new manufacturing facility, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, in April 2002. The new plant in Montgomery, Alabama was completed during 2004, at a cost of $1.7?billion. Production started in May 2005. It employed more than 3000 workers in 2012. Currently, the plant assembles the Hyundai Elantra, the Hyundai Sonata, and the Hyundai Theta engine. It is Hyundai's second attempt at producing cars in North America since Hyundai Auto Canada Inc.'s plant in Quebec closed in 1993.

Hyundai America Technical Center completed construction of its Hyundai/Kia proving ground in California City, California in 2004. The facility is located in the Mojave Desert and features a oval track, a Vehicle Dynamics Area, a vehicle-handling course inside the oval track, a paved hill road, and several special surface roads. A complex featuring offices and indoor testing areas is located on the premises as well. The facility was built at a cost of $50?million. An aerial view can be found here.

In 2003, Consumer Reports, based on complaints about 2002 model new cars that in general are less than one year usage, ranked Hyundai's reliability tied with Honda's; however, J.D. Power and Associates put Hyundai's 2002 vehicles below the industry average according to its annual Initial Quality Survey, which looks at problems in the first 90 days of ownership.

In 2006, J.D. Power and Associates' quality ranking, overall the Hyundai brand ranked 3rd, just behind Porsche and Lexus, and beating longtime rival Toyota. But Hyundai's ranking fell to twelfth in 2007. However, in 2009, Hyundai was the Highest Ranked Non-Premium Nameplate in the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study.

In the 2007 Strategic Vision Total Quality Awards, Hyundai Motor leads the most vehicle segments in Strategic Vision's Total Quality Index, measuring the ownership experience. They attempt to measure more than just the number of problems per vehicle. Hyundai tops in Strategic Vision Total Quality Awards. For the first time ever, Hyundai has risen to share the position of having the most models leading a segment. three models with the top Total Quality Index (TQI) score in their segments, including the Hyundai Azera, Entourage, Santa Fe.

In 2009, Hyundai announced the five-door hatchback variant of the Elantra compact sedan will carry the name Elantra Touring when it goes on sale in the spring as a 2009 model.

In 2009, the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan was named 2009 North American Car of the Year, the first for Hyundai. The Genesis has received a number of well-recognized automobile awards worldwide. It also won the 2009 Canadian Car of the Year after winning its category of Best New Luxury Car under $50,000. The Hyundai's V8 Tau engine in the Genesis, which develops on premium fuel and on regular fuel, received 2009 Ward's 10 Best Engines award.

Subsequently, Chrysler and Hyundai considered a joint venture that would have Chrysler rebranding the Sonata manufactured at Bromont ? only to later announce the deal had failed. The Bromont plant was operational for four years before it closed ? with Hyundai's sales unable to support the plant. Rapper Eve Suggests Britney Spears Didn?t Sing on ?Scream & Shout??

Eve is about to release her first new album in almost a decade, but now that she?s on the promotional bandwagon, she?s throwing some shade at other female artists! ?During a recent interview with Andy Cohen on Bravo?s ?Watch What Happens?, Andy asked Eve about Britney?s British accent on the song ?Scream & Shout?.

?I heard that might not be Britney,? says Eve.

?Really?? asks Cohen. ?Why? It?s someone else in the studio??

?That?s what I heard,? says Eve. ?But, you know, I don?t know. It could be Britney. But I heard it wasn?t. I don?t know.?

Britney?s PR Jeff Raymond told TMZ that Eve?s statement is just proposterous!??It?s absolute BS,? publicist Jeff Raymond told TMZ. ?Britney sang the song. Will.i.am wanted her for this song and she sang on it.?

A source from the studio also got snippy. ?Was Eve even in Studio,? the source said to TMZ. ?Didn?t know. She?s clearly jealous. I didn?t even know she still sings.?

Britney fans freaked out, and for good reason! It?s Britney, Bi*ch!

Wellness efforts target school employees | EdNewsColorado

Alongside the growing emphasis on student fitness and nutrition Colorado is seeing efforts to help teachers, principals and other district staff slim down, de-stress and take other steps to prevent health problems before they start.

The Poudre School District in Fort Collins is planning to open a free health clinic for employees by next fall. Denver Public Schools recently hired a full-time staff wellness coordinator to help launch a new program that includes a comprehensive staff wellness website, a wellness contest and a series of health?focused seminars. In the Englewood schools, employees have access to free yoga and exercise classes, biometric screenings, flu shots and pedometers to track their daily steps.

All these efforts aim to encourage healthy habits in employees, giving them no- or low-cost fitness options, preventive care and health education opportunities at convenient times and locations. The hope is to create healthier employees, reduce absenteeism and contain health care costs.

?Healthier employees, happier employees, more productive employees. Those things all go hand in hand,? said Tiffany Breeding, the new staff wellness coordinator for DPS.

Worksite wellness has been around for years in corporate settings, but it hasn?t been a priority in many school districts. That?s changed over the last few years in part because an emphasis on improving student health also has raised awareness about the health of the adults.

?You can?t teach a child to be healthy if you?re not doing it yourself,? said Kate Logan, a fifth-grade teacher at Palmer Elementary School in Denver.

Logan started working out with personal trainers at one of the district?s eight ?Sound?Body Sound Mind? fitness centers last spring. These days, she?s aiming to lose 15 pounds and compete in an Olympic-length triathlon. Logan, who also has participated in a pedometer program and plans to check out the new staff wellness web site, said she thinks the district?s continued focus on employee wellness is a positive step.

?I think oftentimes it?s too easy to get caught up in our work?People can lose sight of themselves,? she said.

    Wellness program vary

While many districts now offer at least some staff wellness activities, the size and scope range widely. Some districts provide a few on-site Zumba classes or designate an hour of staff-only time in the high school weight room. Others, often with grant funding or sponsorships from their health insurance companies, provide a wide array of highly-coordinated wellness activities.

Corina Lindley, senior community health manager for Kaiser Permanente, said the company is currently working to create more wellness opportunities for schools. She said many worksite wellness programs have catered to office workers who sit at desks all day, but teachers and other district staff don?t fit that profile and have different needs.

?We?re really pushing more energy into this,? she said.

Kaiser, which insures employees in 83 Colorado districts, has contributed funding for wellness efforts underway in DPS and Englewood. Cigna, which insures some DPS employees, has also provided funding for wellness projects in that district.

    Worksite wellness resources

Lisa Walvoord, vice president for policy at LiveWell Colorado, said effective school district wellness programs require leadership, strong communication with district staff and ample opportunities for employees to participate. In addition, while a designated champion can often help launch wellness efforts, she said written policies establish long-term expectations.

LiveWell often focuses on small, low-cost wellness measures, such as better signage to encourage employees to use the stairs or healthy party policies for staff.

That said, Walvoord noted that the more comprehensive a wellness program is, the higher the impact.

    Aiming high

Ashley Schwader, Poudre?s wellness coordinator, said she believes the planned staff clinic will be one of the first of its kind in the state.

?It?s definitely very innovative and new,? she said.

Schwader said the focus will be on ensuring the district?s 3,500 employees have timely access to health care with no associated costs, including no co-pays.

In the Englewood schools, staff wellness efforts have ramped up in the last couple years, said Dale Lumpa, who serves half-time as the district?s wellness coordinator and half-time as a physical education teacher at Charles Hay World School.

In addition to fitness classes and health screenings, the district has updated its wellness web page, created a staff newsletter and enlisted ?super champions? to promote wellness activities and answer employee questions.

?We really want one of the best wellness programs in the country. That?s our goal,? said Lumpa.

Craig Ferguson, principal at Charles Hay, takes on-site yoga classes after school twice a week, and in January got one of the free biometric screenings offered at the school by Kaiser Permanente.

He said the district?s focus on wellness has permeated school culture. For example, instead of convening for happy hour cocktails on a recent Friday evening, school staff went to Jump Street and bounced around on trampolines. Another time, during a break from an all-day training, teachers played kickball outside.

Ferguson said it?s not just the fit and active employees who are getting involved.

?You definitely see teachers taking walks during lunch that may not have been doing that before.?

Ensuring staff participation in wellness activities is an even bigger challenge in the 14,000-employee Denver Public Schools, where ?The you revolution? wellness program launched last month.

Breeding , the staff wellness coordinator, said she will be thrilled if 1,000 employees participate in the upcoming three-month wellness challenge, which will award employees points for activities ranging from running a 5K race to visiting their primary care doctors.

By the third year of the program, Breeding hopes to provide a full lineup of activities and see frequent use of the staff wellness portal. There, employees can fill out health screenings, use a nutrition tracking program, log steps tracked by pedometers, accrue points in wellness challenges, look up doctors and keep track of upcoming wellness classes and fitness activities.

At that point, she said she?ll ask, ?Are we seeing outcomes and the needle moving on health care costs??
